About SIK

Centre for Intercultural Communication (SIK) is an independent centre for research, teaching and commissioned work, located in Stavanger, Norway. SIK researchers work on issues that can roughly be divided into four thematic groups:

  1. Teaching and research related to intercultural communication
  2. Consultancy work on multicultural and diversity issues within the Norwegian context
  3. Development work, both concerning organizational and institutional development
  4. Peace and reconciliation after local or regional conflict

The aim of SIK is to provide greater awareness and insight in communication and cooperation across cultural borders and to develop work-methods which respect and are based on local perspectives. SIK’s strong emphasis on local capacity building is the trademark of all of SIK’s work, whether it is research, commissioned work or teaching. SIK works towards integrating intercultural communication as part of the social sciences. SIKs shares the values as defined in the UN Declaration of Human Rights.

The centre has a particular geographical focus on the French-speaking parts of Africa, but it also does commissioned work and research in South/East Asia, Latin-America and in Norway.

SIK was established in 1991 at the School of Mission and Theology (MHS) in Stavanger, by employees wishing to pass on their knowledge in intercultural communication to organizations working with North/South issues, the multicultural Norway and the internationalization of the professional life.
